Thus far this has been an interesting summer. Between injuries and competing weekend activities hiking interest has been weak. No takers on the the Big Hole Crest hike or the Little Elk hike. So I am leaving them on the schedule. I propose that we do they Big Hole Crest hike July 28 and the Little Elk hike Aug. 18. I am keeping these hikes in the mix because I like them and they are distinctly different from one another (see write-ups below). Contact and departure times remain unchanged.Return to IAC Home Page Click here for printer friendly version
Perfect weather for a hike June 9. Three of us met and decided to hike to Echo Crater at Craters of the Moon. A fun hike ending with a climb to the crest of the crater and great views of the monument. Monument flowers were out in force. For now we may hike Big Southern Butte in the fall.
Next scheduled hikes Are:
June 23, 2018. Hike the Big Hole Crest trail from Pine Creek Pass. A great early season hike with views of the Tetons and Teton Valley. Snow is gone and flowers should be coming out. This is a 6.5+ - 10+ mile moderate round-trip hike depending on what folks want and weather conditions. Remember bear spray is recommended for all hikes east of I-15. Please contact Sam Pole at 208-520-3630 or text or email email@example.com prior to the hike. Meet at the Fred Meyer/McDonalds parking lot at 8 am.
July 7, 2018. Lets try the high country with a hike up Little Elk Creek. Snow should be gone except for some in the upper valley. this hike will take us up to the canyon rim overlooking Waterfall Canyon. Round-trip is approximately 9 miles with an elevation gain of approx. 3500 feet. The hike is a moderate+ with a steeper half mile climb at the end. Please contact Sam Pole at 208-520-3630 or text or email firstname.lastname@example.org prior to the hike. Meet at the Fred Meyer/McDonalds parking lot at 8 am.
Once again we start a new season with lots of snow in the mountains. So it is into the desert first while we wait for the snow to melt.
May 12, 2018: Echo Crater at Craters of the Moon Nat. Monument. This is an old stand-by this time of year and makes for a great day hike into the back country of Craters of the Moon National Monument. Bring snacks/lunch which we will have on top of Echo Crater. Also bring water and a light cover for changing weather. From the top there is a great 360 degree view of the Monument. The hike is level except for the short climb to the top of the crater. Round-trip is approximately 7 miles. Please contact Sam Pole at 208-520-3630 prior to the trip. Otherwise meet at 8am in front of the west Walmart garden Center.
NOTE! NOTE! The CATERS OF THE MOON HIKE WAS RAINED OUT. RESCHEDULE THESE HIKES TO DO CRATERS ON MAY 26 AND BIG SOUTHERN JUNE 9, 2018.
JUNE 9, 2018: Big Southern Butte. This hike follows an access road to the summit with round-trip being about 7 miles. The road has several steeper sections but should not present a problem to anyone comfortable hiking. Again bring snacks/lunch to have at the summit with a
magnificent 360 view of the Snake River Plain. There is no water so bring some and a light cover for changing weather. Please contact Sam Pole at 208-520-3630 prior to the trip. Otherwise meet at 8am in front of the west Walmart garden center.
