Upcoming Hikes

2017 Idaho Alpine Club Hikes

April 29, 2017: Hells Half Acre to the Vent.
This is moderately strenuous hike in that you have to watch your step on the lava field and the hike is 9.4 miles to the vent and back. Elevation gain is 500 feet. Please call or text Sue Braastad at 208-881-4354 prior to the hike. Depart from Walmart West by the Garden center at 8:00 am.

May 13, 2017: Massacre Rocks.
We will take the Oregon Trail Ruts Trail which is 5.6 miles, plus some shorter trails too if there is time and interest. Please call or text Sue Braastad at 208-881-4354 prior to the hike. Depart from Walmart West by the Garden center at 8:00 am.

June 10 (Sat.): Day Hike Craters of the Moon – North Crater Trail.
This is a moderate hike of 1.8 miles one way. It passes four craters of various sizes, together with lava flows, cinder cones, a lava cave, and a group of spatter cones. Both start and end points are next to the scenic drive, so a loop could be made by walking on the road, but there and back is best route. Different parts of the North Crater Flow Trail have views in all directions, and the path rises 350 feet above the flat surroundings for an overall perspective of the national monument. Please call Susan McKinley at 520-3784 prior to the hike. We are meeting at the west side WalMart at 8:00 a.m. in front of garden center to depart.

June 24 (Sat.), 2017: Day hike Little Elk.
This is moderate to strenuous hike up Little Elk Canyon to an overlook of Waterfall Canyon. The round trip is approximately 7 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 3200 feet. Please call Sam Pole at 208-520-3630 prior to the hike. Depart 7:30 am from Fred Meyer-McDonald parking lot.

July 8 (Sat.): Day Hike Darby Canyon (Windcave).
This is a 5 mile out and back moderate to difficult hike, with an elevation gain of 2,020 feet. Dogs must be on a leash. The Trailhead is located about 20 minutes just outside the town of Driggs (between Victor and Driggs), at the end of Darby road. The turn off for this road is just south of the spud theater. When you get to the fork that goes to the girls scout camp, stay left. Easiest route is highway 26 to Swan Valley, left on highway 31 and left on highway 33 from Victor. Please call Susan McKinley at 520-3784 prior to the hike. We are meeting at the Fred Meyer/ McDonald’s parking lot at 7:30 a.m. to depart.

July 22 (Sat.), 2017: Taylor Mountain Day Hike.
Taylor Mountain is just north of the road to Teton Pass east of Victor, Idaho. The hike is judged to be moderate+ because of the last mile climb to Taylor Mountain. Otherwise it is a pleasant hike. Round trip is approx. 7.2 miles. Elevation gain is 2800 feet. Please call Sam Pole at 520-3630 prior to the hike. Depart 7:30 am from the Fred Meyer-McDonald parking lot.

Aug. 5 , 2017: Day hike/ Hurricane Pass in the Tetons.
This is a strenuous hike of 16 plus miles roundtrip into the heart of the Tetons and overlooking Cascade Canyon in Grand Teton National Park. The elevation gain is about 3,400 feet. Contact Sam Pole at 520-3630 prior to the hike. Depart 7:30 am from the Fred Meyer/McDonald’s parking lot.

August 26 (Sat.): Day Hike Salamander Lakes.
This is a 7.3 mile loop trail, with an elevation gain of 1,400 feet. This is a moderate trail in the Centennial Mountain. The drive is 49 miles north of Idaho Falls on Interstate 15, take the Dubois exit and head east. Stay on the main road and head northeast 27.4 miles to Kilgore. At the T-intersection at 28.3 miles beyond Kilgore, turn left (west) and drive .5 mile. Turn right (north) on Forest Road 026 and drive 4.3 miles to where the road splits. Here Road 026 goes both straight ahead and to the left. Keep straight ahead and go 1.5 miles to the junction with Road 027, just past Cottonwood Creek. At the junction, road 027 turns off to the right. Take the left branch, which is still Road 026 and go .8 mile to Road 029, Turn right on 029 and go about 2 more miles to the trailhead at the end of the road. The trailhead is on the right, but the parking area is just before it on the left. The trail up Trail Creek to miniature Salamander Lake goes into the heart of the Centennial Range along the Idaho-Montana border east of I-15. Please call Susan McKinley at 520-3784 prior to the hike. We are meeting at the west side Wal Mart at 8:00 a.m. in front of the garden center to depart.

Sept. 9, 2017: Devil’s Stairs.
This is about 8 miles RT, or longer if we want to go to Alaska Basin. There is a steep ascent of about 1000’ in a mile or so. Please call or text Sue Braastad at 208-881-4354 prior to the hike. Depart 7:30 am from the Fred Meyer/McDonald’s parking lot.

It is 1.8 miles to Iron Bog Lake and another mile to Fish Pole Lake where camp will be. Should anyone wish to camp at Iron Bog Lake, that will be ok. Overnight gear is required (cooking essentials, food, tent, sleeping bag, air mattress, etc.). Fishing and exploring will be the focus of this outing. Or if you wish to simply relax and read a book in a beautiful setting, do so. Please call Sam Pole at 520-3630 prior to the trip. We will leave from the west Wal-Mart parking lot in front of the garden center at noon Friday Sept. 23 . We will return late Sunday the 24.

October 21, 2017: Big Hole Crest Trail.
This hike will be as long as we decide to make it. We will leave the parking lot off Hwy 31 near Pine Creek Pass and head out. This trail is commonly an overnight trek, but we will probably go 8-12 miles round trip, out and back. . Depart 7:30 am from the Fred Meyer/McDonald’s parking lot. Please call Susan McKinley at 520-3784 prior to the hike.
